Kate is an elusive daughter of the East Coast. A true Nova Scotian at heart, she’s always chatting with people and laughing. It’s amazing she gets any writing done at all. Good thing those Maritimers are damn hard workers. Copious amounts of Vancouver espresso helps, too.

When she’s not writing (which is rare), Kate leans toward the active scene. What? A writer that does triathlons and races? Now that’s bizarre. Hence the reason this Atlantic girl ended up in Vancouver. East meets West. Sunny disposition with a dry sense of humour.

The inciting incident has definitely arrived. Kate has optioned three of her feature screenplays and just got hired for a rewrite. Fingers crossed, the first plot point will bring travel. For now, she’s happy as anything to be writing, writing, writing. It’s all about the stories and Kate has an endless supply of those.

The subplots bring adventure in the form of consulting for local high tech companies, biking and hiking trips, travelling, and schmoozing with the local film scene. The humour in the story always comes from her friends. That’s the most important rule in storytelling. Be sure the secondary characters make you laugh. How else would the heroine learn anything?

Mountains, ocean, and world-class java. What else could a writer want? Ah yes, rain. Lots of it. Now, non-coastal people tend to dis the rain. But writers and cinematographers know better. Rain inspires stories and enhances brilliant colours. The true secret is that it only rains here for a couple of months. Then the sunshine beckons for days on end and everyone in the city comes out to play. And if you miss the sunshine too much, it’s a quick jaunt to the city of angels.
