It’s a tricky balance being a creative type. Not only are most of us juggling a dayjob and our passion. But we usually have to answer to family and friends for our not-so-little obsession. How do you explain that the people in your head are just as important as the folks standing in front of you?

When Did Comedy Become So Scary?

These days, it seems comedy scripts are the most frightening thing to produce. Scarier than period pieces. More terrifying than a story told entirely in an ancient language. Oh my God. What if people don’t get the joke?

Newsflash, folks. It’s okay that everyone doesn’t have the same sense of humour. That fact seems to send money-types running. We’ll only make comedy with Julia Roberts. Or Will Farrell. But remember – for years, people thought of horror fans as a niche audience. Embrace the niche!

The Year of Writing Dangerously

Whether you believe in resolutions or not, the new year always brings a fresh perspective. For some, it’s the reminder that too much wine and sugar cause pain. For me, well yes…it brings that. But more profoundly, I’ve decided this is the year of taking risks.

How can I not when 2006 went out with such a bang? Powers shifted in the US. Hussein and Pinochet are gone. Governments concede that climate change isn’t just a Hollywood conspiracy tale. In the screenwriting biz, we call that one hell of a turning point.
